Neighborhood Matters Screening: Reel in the Closet

Reel In The Closet is the latest feature-length documentary that connects the viewers with queer people from the past through the home movies that they left behind.  To make it, filmmaker Stu Maddox searched through closets, attics, and archives around the world to discover home movies, recorded news stories, and community productions; some of which date back to the 1930s.  This film offers a glimpse into the real lives of GLBTQ people from the past through hundreds of never-before-seen home movies.

Maddox’s previous films include Gen Silent, a widely used documentary about Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender older people hiding their lives to survive discrimination, bullying and abuse, and Bob and Jack’s 52-Year Adventure, a film about an Army sergeant who began an affair with his commanding officer in 1952.

Neighborhood Matters is a series that celebrates the ways in which community groups have shaped the neighborhoods surrounding the Northeastern campus. This series is co-curated by the Northeastern Center for the Arts and the Archives and Special Collections at the Northeastern University Library.
